Hyderabad, May 14: The barrage of news, views and advice about the Coronavirus outbreak has triggered a sense of panic among the public. In their eagerness to avoid being infected, the public has thrown skepticism and common sense out of the video and started to believe in every bit of information about the Covid-19 virus posted on social media.
A rumour advocating people to abstain from consuming eggs, meat or fish hinting at claims that non-vegetarian food might carry the Covid-19 virus has started to trend intensely on social media, resulting in a significant decline in the sales of meat, chicken and eggs.
To nip the rumours in the bud, Ranjit Reddy, president, Telangana Poultry Breeders’ Association, appealed to Finance Minister Harish Rao to take action against the rumour linking infection by Covid-19 virus to the consumption of chicken and eggs on social media.
Lakshma Reddy, director of Telangana animal husbandry department joined the campaign to counter the rumours and clarified that not even one hen or rooster had been diagnosed with the Coronavirus in the state.
“I strongly advise the public not to believe these rumours. In fact, chicken and eggs are the best way to boost immunity to fight Coronavirus. Stern action will be taken against those who spread rumours of this kind,” Lakshma Reddy warned.
